What’s Better Than A Dragon?

It might seem like an obvious thing to say, but dragons are pretty cool. I’m a big fantasy guy- I love all kinds of magical quests and adventures and, historically, many of these have involved dragons. However, dare I say it, there are some things better than dragons. This is something I really had to think about when creating Billy.

I’ll let you in on a secret. Billy is basically a dog. He’s cute, energetic, lovable, and mostly motivated by food. Hence dog. If you know me at all, then you’ll know that I love dogs. The original designs for Billy were much more dog-like, with our protagonist scrambling around on 4 legs instead of 2. However, both visually and narratively it worked better to have Billy move in a way that was more relatable for our audience of little humans. But now that I think about it…. They are pretty much dogs too. Cute, energetic, lovable, and motivated by food. The main differences between our nieces and nephews and our canine companions is that the former love to hear stories about fun-loving dragons charging, and that, legally, you aren’t allowed to leave them alone in the house while you go to the pub.

Either way, I’m very glad for both of them.
